Need some help losing that extra holiday weight?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Mostlyjudene 4. I mean we all love seeing family and exchanging gifts. But we also are very prone to over-indulging.  I mean c’mon, what’s one more of Uncle Pat’s peanut butter balls going to do to my waistline?

It’s ironic that the holidays and the plethora of food occur JUST before that lovely day when people make promises to “get back into my beach body.”  But like most New Year’s resolutions do, you fizzle out and forget all about it before the calendar even changes to February.

The key to any new habit, especially fitness or improving your health, is accountability. Sure we can “say” we’ll go to the gym.  But what if your personal trainer knocked on your door with workout gear in hand? NO COMMUTE, NO EXCUSES! Yes, such a thing exists.

This month, the Popoli Realty team is excited to present Judene Scheidt of Flex Appeal Personal Fitness Training. We’ll let her tell her story, but let’s just say that she saw an opportunity and a need in the fitness world after working as a personal trainer at a gym for years and fully embraced it.

  • What is the name of your business?
    Flex Appeal Personal Fitness Training
  • How long have you done this?
I’ve been doing it part-time for 11 years, and full-time for 1-1/2 years.
  • What led you to this business/what did you do before?
I was a member at a small, local gym, and I spent so much time working out there that the owner asked me if I’d ever considered becoming a Personal Fitness Trainer.  I had a secure, full-time administrative office job at the time, but I certainly didn’t “love” it.  The idea of having a job that I really enjoyed and was passionate about was very intriguing!  I worked toward obtaining two different Personal Fitness Training Certifications (AMF and AFAA) and was hired to work as a part-time fitness trainer at two well-respected local gyms.  I worked for them for seven years, and I also launched Flex Appeal Personal Fitness Training — taking my expertise out of the gym and into clients’ homes, offices, basements, and backyards.
  • What is your “unique selling proposition” – how do you stand out from your competitors?
The thing that makes Flex Appeal Personal Fitness Training so unique is that I bring the gym to my clients.  I work with them in the privacy and comfort of their own environments.  If clients do not have any exercise equipment, I bring in exercise tools such as dumbbells, stability balls, and resistance tubing for them to use.  In addition, I provide encouragement and instruction at each visit so that the client is being professionally monitored for proper exercise form and execution.  Having a Certified PFT there provides motivation, safety, and a “no-excuses” atmosphere.
You can’t say, “I don’t feel like working out right now” when I’m ringing your doorbell with your exercise program in my hand.  Having a PFT come to you at a pre-determined time completely eliminates the temptation to “skip” a workout!
  • Why do you love what you do?
The thing that I love best about what I do is seeing a client’s confidence increase along with his/her strength and stamina.  So many people underestimate themselves.  When a client who couldn’t do a push-up when we started working together gets to the point where he/she is doing complete sets of push-ups — that’s as exciting for me as it is for the client!  I love getting my clients to their goals and encouraging them to be proud of their accomplishments.
  • What are three ways we can all work to get into better shape/health starting right now?
The best way is to start slow.  Too often people give up on a workout routine because they do too much, too fast and get injured and discouraged.  Start by incorporating simple habits into your daily routine such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator; parking farther away from your destination so you have to walk more; waking up 15 minutes earlier each day so you can do some stretching and simple calisthenics.
